When talking about past Philippine presidents, one would easily groan and think of our long history of corrupt administrations. Ramon Magsaysay's legacy, however, tells a different story. His contributions for our country are incomparable and paramount. They prove that Filipino presidents can rule without corruption and leave with their hands tainted red. Magsaysay is proof that local leaders can put the Filipino people first and foremost, most especially the Filipino poor. To pass 73 laws in his lifetime alone was already an incredible feat. But he was more than just the President, he was also a father and a World War II hero. I hope our public servants would follow in his footsteps. It is saddenning that such golden age is often overshadowed by our histor with dirty politics.

Watching EDSA People Power Revolution lectures such as this can't help but make me compare the late Ferdinand Marcos' reign as a Philippine dictator to the current administration we have today which is led by his son, Bongbong "BBM" Marcos. It is quite obvious how the latter wants to follow in the former's footsteps, while at the same time, make a name for himself. Like his father, BBM has his own sets of cronies, politicians and businessmen alike who works for him like a dog while he gives them positions in the local government and satisfy their needs through foreign investments. He is also maintaining the close ties that the country has with America, making him another puppet leader of the Imperial State. Now, with the additional international threat of China lurking around our western waters and ruthlessly attacking our citizens, our freedom is once again being challenged. There is no better time to take inspiration from the heroes of the 1986 People Power Revolution than now. We must bring back the Spirit of EDSA and rally our people to defend what is ours. The Filipino act of bayanihan should not only manifest during elections, but must automatically take effect most especially during these times of great struggle. Yet, our current politics continue to divide to us, leaving our government vulnerable. We are a peace-loving country always forced to be at war with each other and with other nations. This, unfortunately, has been our doomed reality. If we must fight any impending threat to our country, BBM must do what he has, ironically, always advocated for-"unity".

Watching the video really gives us various insights as to what happened during President Marcos' era and gives us an idea of the harsh realities that our ancestors had to go through. This video also serves as a great reminder of the importance of remembering our history and learning from it to ensure and avoid it from happening again. One thing that really stood out to me during the video was the discussion regarding Marcos' era being referred to as the "golden age" of our country's economy. Even though it is true that our economy was at its peak during his time, it really gives off a different perspective whenever we were to look at it in a bigger picture.

Thank you for this very informative video, Sir Xiao Chua! This whole time I thought that the barangay was indeed the political unit or community of our ancestors back then as that was what I was taught by my teachers in high school. However, from this video, I learned that it was not the case as only one document supported this idea, whereas the rest of the documents contained information that would allow us to infer that the “bayan” was the political unit that our ancestors had. Although it was true that barangays existed during that time, it only consisted of individuals who were related to one another by blood, which is technically similar to a family living in a compound today. Additionally, unlike the barangay captains who have great power and responsibilities in leading the community, the members of the principalia who headed these units as the “kabesas” were also abused by the government back then as they did not receive any salary and even had to sacrifice their own money and wealth if ever the taxes collected in their area did not reach its quota. Despite having perks like not doing “polo y servicios” and not paying taxes, they were not given that much power compared to the barangay officials that we have today, hence, it can be said that it was not really the political unit of our ancestors. Moreover, I also agree that the barangay officials today are just as important as any other political position and that we should not belittle their significance as they are the government officials that we can directly go to when we immediately need help.

We all learned or at least heard about the EDSA Revolution at some point in our life (whether it's from textbooks or our grade school teachers), but this video showed me how much more there is still to understand regarding this event. The fact that we continually revisit this event, even as new generations come, underscores its lasting importance. Watching this lecture reminded me of the bravery displayed by the Filipinos who stood up for what they believed was right. The EDSA Revolution was a remarkably unifying event against tyranny and dictatorship, a lesson we must remember to prevent history from repeating itself. Hence why we must talk and discuss about the things that transpired in that day to future generations, and for years to come.

Unlike what most people think, it is indeed true that our ancestors were not dull and uncivilized. The maritime culture of our ancestors, their belief in anitos and spirits, and their practices and traditions such as the “sandugo” all show that they were already civilized back then, unlike some preconceptions which state that they were primitive. Moreover, their social hierarchy signified by the amount of gold that one had possession of, the political system that they established, and the technology that they developed such as the boats and swords that they used show that they were truly intellectual and creative individuals.

This episode of Kasaysayan, Kaysaya, is full of insightful stories about the 3 generations of The Magsaysay. If I were to summarize 3 words that I learned from this episode, it would be honesty, integrity, and hard work. After hearing the stories of The Magsaysays, I realized that they embodied all of these words in different aspects. Ramon Magsaysay Sr.'s main legacy of showing what a true leader is should be an inspiration to the government right now. He focused on fieldwork where he interacts with people in his daily life and knows about the issues and concerns of these people. Through this, he will do his part, as the president or even as a defense secretary, and address these issues. Ramon Magsaysay Jr. learned a lot from his father and was inspired by his father’s legacy and became a senator. He passed a lot of laws, mostly focused on business and agriculture; he is also known for his IT work, which was implemented in the Philippines. Furthermore, Paco Magsaysay had a different childhood from his father and even grandfather; he was much more focused on business, but he did not let other people forget about his grandfather’s legacy by creating the Ramon Magsaysay Award. Truly, the former president Ramon Magsaysay Sr. is still inspiring people, especially his family, and still continuing the legacy that he started.

After watching this video, I realized that even before the Philippines were colonized by other nations, our ancestors are already able to stand on their own. They have established their own culture, traditions, and practices which made them stand out from the rest. However because our colonizers were far more powerful, they have corrupted the minds of many to the extent that Filipinos started to believe that their influences (traditions and cultures) were better than what our ancestors have established during the past.

Magsaysay's legacy highlights the importance of ethical leadership and the necessity of electing honest, transparent leaders who truly serve the public. His example inspires me, as a Filipino, to vote for officials who address the people's needs with integrity, while avoiding false promises. This approach is crucial for the country's development. Additionally, Magsaysay's leadership serves as a reminder that genuine progress comes from leaders who prioritize the welfare of their citizens, fostering trust and unity in the nation.

After watching the video on the EDSA People's Power Revolution, my admiration for the strength and unity of the Filipino people during a crucial period grew even deeper. It was truly inspiring to witness individuals coming together to fight for democracy, ultimately resulting in substantial political and economic transformations through embracing global markets. This contemplation emphasizes our ability to withstand the challenges posed by the Marcos regime and the impact of united efforts. The documentary provided me with a more comprehensive insight into how the EDSA Revolution influenced our nation and brought to light previously unnoticed intricacies in our history.

It is important to have an accurate historical education, especially regarding the Martial Law Period, because it helps in understanding the true impact of that era on society, economy, and politics. It also allows for a more informed and balanced perspective, which is essential for preventing the distortion of historical facts and promoting social awareness.

I did not realize how important President Ramon Magsaysay is to the Philippines. I have heard of him, but I do not know a whole lot about him. Through Professor Chua I was able to know that President Ramon Magsaysay valued honesty and transparency. I would say he is unlike most of the politicians that we have especially since not many of them uphold to the ethical and proper ways when it comes to leadership. It gives me hope that there are leaders like Ramon Magsaysay, and I hope one day, future leaders may be inspired by him.

Before watching this video, I honestly had no idea about President Ramon Magsaysay and his contributions and legacy other than him being one of our past presidents. Watching this interview really gave me a newfound perspective and respect for his dedication, integrity, and impact on our country. Learning about his leadership and his efforts and contributions for the betterment of the country was truly inspiring. This video is a good reminder of what great leadership truly is and what it can do and achieve for our country. His leadership really shows us that there is always hope for our country and its betterment.

This is helpful, because I barely learned anything from my Historiography class noong nasa college ako. My school assigned a college instructor who is not vertically aligned sa major ko (she's Political Science major), so both of us don't understand what Historiography is.

The video interview really highlights the need to analyze and reflect upon historical narratives and how easy it is to be manipulated, much like how misinformation towards the Marcos Dictatorship had made people believe in false historical narratives about the Martial Law era. This sheds light in the importance of historical awareness, vigilance and critical thinking when it comes to analyzing historical events rather than blindly believing anything we see or hear. I also agree that criticisms and free speech are integral parts of a democracy as these are ways for us to voice out our discontentment and push for change for the betterment of our country and society.

The video values and highlights the importance of cemeteries and its deeper meaning and essence. Although cemeteries are generally associated with death, we must also remember that these also represent our connection to our country's history, culture, and legacy. These places serve as a bridge between us, the living, and the dead acting as a reminder and remembrance for us of the legacy and sacrifices that the departed have left for us. Cemeteries are also an important place that brings families together and acts as a place for one to reflect, remember, and cherish those moments with one another.

This video truly shows that the common misconception and assumption that we have about our ancestors being stupid is entirely wrong and incorrect. It shows that our ancestors truly had their own rich culture, identity, beliefs, tradition, and practices. Even though Spain has its influences on our culture and tradition, simply assuming that our ancestors were barbaric and stupid prior to our colonization undervalues and neglects the rich culture and traditions that had existed before our colonization.
